(Each attendee will only be able to participate in one trip) Field Trip
#1 This trip will include a hike on the Old Gordon Trail in Colorado National Monument to view cacti in habitat including Escobaria missouriensis, Echinocereus triglochidiatus and several Opuntias and also enjoy some spectacular views of the Monument. This portion of the trip will involve a moderately strenuous walk of approximately 3 miles in rough terrain. Lunch will be provided at a picnic area before we leave the Monument. A series of stops approximately 30 miles south of Grand Junction in a side canyon of the Gunnison River will view Pediocactus simpsonii, Sclerocactus glaucus, Escobaria missouriensis, Echinocereus triglochidiatus and several Opuntias. This portion of the trip will involve several short walks. Upon returning to Grand Junction, we will stop at the Mesa County Fair Grounds to see one of two public gardens maintained by the Chinle Chapter. The trip will conclude at the conference hotel in time for supper. Field Trip
#2 This trip will visit the two highly acclaimed gardens in Grand Junction maintained by the Chinle Chapter. The garden at the Mesa County Fair Grounds was established in 2000 and the garden at the Western Colorado Botanical Garden was established in 2002. These large gardens include a wide variety of cacti, agaves and other succulent and non-succulent xeric plants. A stop will also be made on the edge of Grand Junction to view several local cacti in habitat and enjoy some spectacular views of the Colorado National Monument. This trip involves some short easy walks on uneven terrain and includes lunch. The trip will conclude at the conference hotel by mid afternoon.
Field Trip #3 For those wishing to explore the area on their own handouts will be provided. Some options include hikes, museums, wineries, and tours of other local attractions. Participants will provide their own transportation and lunches.
